Achievements in 2014

The Friends have been very busy this year and among other things have: -
  • built an orienteering course with Cardiff high school
  • built and launched an Explorer Trail for Junior schools (downloads on this site)
  • carried out a survey (data collected in June and August) for Plantlife
  • contributed to the work of Grow Wild by testing seed growth in the meadows
  • established 5 geocaches (details on https://www.geocaching.com/)
  • launched leaflets to inform the local community about their local amenity
  • worked with the Wildlife trust of S and SE Wales as "landowners" to formulate plans to increase biodiversity in the meadows
  • seeded areas with yellow rattle.
  • worked with two local high schools (Llanishen and Cardiff) and 3 junior schools (Lakeside, Coedglas and Rhydypennau) to plant trees and flowers, maintain areas planted in previous years, give talks about the Nant Fawr area, do stream shuffles, plan and carry out complete days working in the environment (downloads available for the scavenger hunts) and for Ranger lead walks.
  • completed maintenance work e.g. laying alder paths, reinstating drainage, digging drainage ditches, removing invasive species, hay raking
With the support and enthusiasm of everyone involved with the work of the Friends behind her, Rhian was awarded the Parks and Open Spaces Volunteer of the Year Award 2014 - seen here with Jane (Chairman of the Friends) and Kevin (our Ranger).
None of this work could have been achieved without Kevin's involvement in the planning, provision of guidance and equipment, supervision and general support.
New projects are already being planned and next year looks like a busy one - why not join us?
