Alder cone collection

Gwent Wildlife Trust contacted the Friends about collecting Alder cones from the Nant Fawr as part of the UK National Tree Seed Project. This involves collecting seeds from all the native tree and shrub species from high and low altitude from every Geographic Zone in the UK (including Lowland Alder from Geographic Zone 303 i.e. the Nant Fawr area). The seeds are then stored (frozen) in the Millennium Seed Bank and can be used for research and restocking the countryside, which is particularly pertinent given the range of tree diseases threatening our native flora.

Andy and John spent the morning (fortunately dry!) of November 21st collecting alder cones from Woods Covert and Rhydypenau Woods. It's a pleasure to be able to contribute to such an important project.
