Orchard planting in Rhydypenau meadow

January 19th arrived and the sun shone. We wrapped up warmly and were extremely relieved to finally receive the nine trees to plant an hour before we left the house - my fault!
Ian Sturrock and Sons had sent rare old fruit trees from Bangor as we set about our Conservation/ Pollinator project: apple (Channel Beauty, Cox Cymraeg, Pig Aderyn, Morgan Sweet, Bardsey Island, Monmouth Beauty and Afal Nant Gwrtheryn), Abergwyngregyn damson and Penrhyn Castle pear trees - see his Website for more details about their history.

The nine Y10 pupils from Cardiff High school were able to plant a tree each and we cleared around each for sowing yellow rattle and native wild flower seeds suitable for our clay soil.
We hope that the flowers will keep down the growth of the grass and minimise mowing in the orchard area.

Thank you again to Jane, Derek and Mary for supporting us, and to Kevin whose advice and cooperation is invaluable.
