The End of an Era

Some of you may have noticed that the bird viewing platform facing Lisvane Reservoir is being dismantled for safety reasons.   It was built by the volunteers from The Friends of Nant Fawr over 20 years  ago and was opened in 1998.

The platform was constructed by filling old tyres  with stones and then surrounding those with a wooden framework.  It has proved very popular with birdwatchers, as it was a good vantage point to watch the birds on the reservoir.  Sadly, over the last few years the wood has started to rot and it was felt it was not possible to renovate it.

One of the concerns which the Friends and the Council had was the fact that the platform was quite high above the surrounding area and it was  looking dangerous once the protecting fences had rotted.

It has been confirmed by Welsh Water that they are planning to erect a bird hide on the edge of Lisvane Reservoir close to the spot where the bird viewing platform stood.   Hence it has been decided to go ahead with removing the old structure.
The bird hide will be accessible to the public as there are plans to develop an access point to the reservoir in due course, a few hundred yards to the south of the platform.
